The meetings are held at the Legion Building at 7:00 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month, except January, July, and August. Membership dues are $12.00 for seniors and $2.50 for juniors.
The main purpose of the organization is to participate in and contribute to the accomplishment of the aims and purposes of the American Legion, which is to promote Americanism/Patriotism, aid veteran's causes and community service. There is also a camaraderie and fellowship involved in the organization. While the Legion received its charter in 1920, the Auxiliary received its charter on July 16, 1931.
The two main fund raising projects are a salad luncheon held in April and a food stand at the Legion Hall on the 4th of July. Much of the money goes to veterans causes. The Veterans' Affairs and Rehabilitation Chairman oversees collection of clothes, gifts, and handmade items for veterans as well as volunteers for visits to Veterans Homes. An Americanism Essay Contest is held on the grade and high school levels with winners going on to competition at a higher level. Gold Star Mothers are honored. Illinois Girls' State representatives are sent to represent the Unit and to learn how our government operates. The Henry Unit sends volunteers to help veterans make poppies for poppy sales as well as sell poppies to generate funds to help the veterans. A Miss 4th of July contest is held for girls 7-10 years of age. The proceeds are used for local use projects such as Project Success, D.C. Busters, and Auxiliary Youth Projects.
