Henry Council 2405
The Knights of Columbus is an international men's Catholic service organization. Founded in 1882 in New Have, Connecticut by Father Michael McGivney it cared for the widows and children of the immigrant Catholic population.
The organization chose the name "Knights of Columbus" because the members felt that as a Catholic group it should relate to Christopher Columbus, the Catholic discoverer of America. At the same time "Knights" would signify that the membership held knightly ideals of spirituality and service to the Catholic church, country and fellowman.
With 90 members, the local council emphasizes activities to benefit youth, families, the community and the Catholic church. Each year the council sponsors a basketball free throw championship contest and a Drug Abuse Awareness Poster contest at the Henry Grade School. It spnsored two summer youth baseball teams: a Little LEague team and a T-Ball team. The council sponsored the Marshall-Putnam-Stark Show Choir at the Marshall-Putnam Fair this year.
The council also established a "Scholarship Program" to provide financial assistance for families whose children attend a Catholic grade school, high school, or college.
The council meets the first Tuesday of each month at St. Joseph's Hall, 1007 North St. in Henry. Any Catholic gentlemen, 18 years of age, is welcome to join.
